This year the Cruising Association celebrates its’ Centenary, and to commemorate the event the Mediterranean Section has organised an extended cruise in Turkey for its members.
Participants will spend 13 days pottering around some of the most scenic anchorages of the Datca and Bozborun peninsulars. The organiser of the event, Suzie O’Hagan-Roots, commented: ‘The combination of easy sailing, safe anchorages, spectacular ruins and traditional villages is unbeatable. We sailed to Turkey from Australia 4 years ago, and just cannot tear ourselves away from the area. It is still so unspoiled and beautiful; a really special place where you can experience the noises and scents of the countryside and pick the fruit literally overhanging the roadside.
Our itinerary takes us from Marmaris to the ruins of ancient Loryma at Bozuk Buku, thence to the lovely small town of Bozburun, and from there it is a fast sail to Keci Buku. This spectacular bay, described by sailing guru and author Rod Heikell as ‘a gem’ is the home of Marti Marina. At the head of the bay off Orhaniye village is our favourite anchorage of all. We love it so much here that we have bought some land high in the hills overlooking the bay. One day when we swallow the anchor this will be our home!’
From Orhaniye the yachts will sail into the miniature harbour at Palamut, which will be our base for an excursion by local bus to the magnificent ruins of Knidos. Finally, for the last couple of days we will have a brisk sail down to Gocek, where we shall have our very special Centenary dinner at one of the local restaurants.
Please note that this event (which was limited to 17 yachts and 50 participants), was over-subscribed within days of appearing on the C.A website and we have even closed the waiting list! It says a lot for the area!
